GC&SU students excel at fencing

Four Georgia College & State University students are now nationally ranked after scoring victories at United States Fencing Association tournaments.

According to coach Giza Martiny, Allen Halligan, Michael Harrison, Ahmad Zephir and Sonny Tennille all finished in the top three and became nationally ranked and qualified for the fencing National Championships.

William Mizell, Julia Goss, Carrie Cheek, Molly Hefner, Jennifer Mauriello, Judson Hartley, Christopher Goggans, and Page Jackson also competed in these three qualifying tournaments, said Martiny.

Students could only fence in two weapons, foil and epee, said Martiny. In the epee, Christopher Goggans placed second and Allen Halligan and Page Jackson tied for third. In the foil, Goggans and Ahmed Zephir both placed second in the foil event.

“It was a great accomplishment for Ahmad Zephir to place against nationally top ranked fencers from Atlanta,” Martiny said. Sonny Tennille came in fourth after being defeated 14-15 by Ramon Figueroa from Augusta Fencing.

The GC&SU team of Zephir and Tennille placed second and third in the sabre-man event, while William Mizell placed second and Parks Greene of GC&SU came in fourth, said Martiny. In the foil-men event , Mizell and Tennille represented GC&SU in the finals but did not place in the top four.

“This event was full of surprises,” said Martiny, who added Mizell eliminated all of his teammates in this event, then went on to eliminate Jonathan Cohen, the top ranked fencer.

The GS&SU women also placed in these events. In the epee event, Carrie Cheek, Julia Goss, and Molly Hefner placed in the top three. In the foil event Goss placed second and Jennifer Mauriello placed third. In the women’s Sabre event Hefner placed second and Cheek placed third.

The next event for the GC&SU fencers is at the Georgia State Intercollegiate Championships on February 17-18, 2001. Georgia College & State University will host this even.
